iPhone 6 speculation goes bezel-less

iPhone 6 speculation goes bezel-less
Will the iPhone 6 finally ditch the bezel? Mock-ups like to think so.The real thing is less certain, though. The latest speculation comes from the Korea Herald, which said that Apple may bring out a bezel-free iPhone 6 that supports fingerprint scanning. The rumor was widely reported in blogs that follow Apple. A bezel-free design -- which some publications depict as an edge-to-edge display -- would presumably require the fingerprint scanner to be incorporated into the display. On the iPhone 5S, fingerprint scanning is done via the home button.Related storiesVisions of a larger iPhone 6 are stunningThis is by no means a first for this rumor. Speculation about an iPhone with an edge-to-edge display has been around for years. The problem is, the real next-gen iPhone, aka iPhone 6, isn't due for a long time. So, Apple could very well be testing a bezel-free design, but what the company ultimately decides is unknown. And note that there have also been reports of a planned iPhone 6 with glass that is curved at the edges. The Korea Herald also claims that Samsung's Galaxy S5 will come with the side bezels removed, citing new touch panel technology that would allow this.

iPhone 6 may include sensors to detect the weather, says analyst

iPhone 6 may include sensors to detect the weather, says analyst
It's not the heat, it's the humidity. And Apple's next iPhone may feel it just like you do.Expected to arrive this year, the iPhone 6 could come equipped with its own barometer to automatically detect the temperature, humidity, and air pressure, according to ESM-China analyst Sun Changxu. In a report covered by blog site G for Games, Chagxu cited "sources close to the matter" as responsible for this latest tidbit.Assuming the report is true, Apple will be playing catch-up with Samsung, which added weather sensors to its Galaxy S4 a year ago. Of course, current iPhone owners can simply ask Siri for the temperature or humidity. But Apple's voice assistant relies on external sources to get that information.Last month, Changxu floated rumors that Apple could offer the iPhone 6 in two sizes -- a 4.7-inch version slated to debut this June and a 5.7-inch edition to launch later in the year. Other reports say Apple will offer sensors to check your own temperature and other bodily features, capabilities that could arrive with the next iPhone or the much-rumored iWatch.Apple has yet to make any official declaration about a successor to the iPhone 5S and 5C.(Via MacRumors)

iPhone 6 camera may jump to 13 megapixels

iPhone 6 camera may jump to 13 megapixels
Apple may be planning to beef up the iSight camera in its upcoming iPhone 6 smartphone, according to a report via GforGames.Citing Chinese site Digi-wo.com, the report said Apple may be upgrading to a new 13-megapixel Sony camera sensor in its iPhone 6. The company's current 5S, 5C, and 4S smartphone cameras offer 8 megapixels.Rumors on the capabilities and components of the highly anticipated iPhone 6 have been heating up amid broad expectations that Apple will unveil its next smartphone around September. The company is widely expected to come out with two models -- one a 4.7-inch version and, later, a 5.5-inch version -- as Apple tries to keep up with a trend toward bigger-display smartphones and also maintain a top position in themarket. Also, an alleged new cover glass for the device was leaked this month, showing that Apple may be switching from Corning's Gorilla Glass to a harder sapphire-glass display.Apple, which has a reputation for maintaining absolute secrecy about its plans, has remained tight-lipped on the expected iPhone 6. The company didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

iPhone 5S, 5-inch iPhone 6 allegedly spotted at supplier

iPhone 5S, 5-inch iPhone 6 allegedly spotted at supplier
The much-rumored iPhone 5S and a 5-inch iPhone 6 have shown up at an Apple supplier in China, according to a post on a Chinese microblogging site. The models could be released this year, according to a post by a Sina Tech user called Old Yao. He reports that a friend of his at a supplier has seen the models and says that the iPhone 5S resembles the iPhone 5, while the iPhone 6 is wider, longer, and thinner. CNET has contacted Apple for comment and will update this report when we learn more.As Apple gets closer to an anticipated launch of a new smartphone, the speculation and rumor mill go into overdrive, so while Old Yao's comments are food for thought, they should also be consumed with perhaps more than a grain of salt.Earlier analyst speculation held that Apple would release an iPhone 5S and a revamped version of the iPhone 5 in June or July. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted last month that the new S model would resemble the current model with a few improvements, including an A7 chip for faster performance and a fingerprint sensor. A larger screen size for an iPhone 6 might attract consumers smitten with Samsung's 4.8-inch Galaxy S3 and 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2.

iPhone 5S supply may not reach demand until December

iPhone 5S supply may not reach demand until December
Apple's supply of the iPhone 5S may not catch up with demand until early December. At least, that's the forecast from analyst Gene Munster. In an investors' note out Thursday, Munster said that Apple's online stores in the US, the UK, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and China all forecast a ship time of October for the 5S. In Japan, the gold 5S was listed as unavailable, and customers were advised to check their local stores. The analyst believes the 5S will mimic its precedessor in supply and demand."By comparison, the iPhone 5 did not reach supply/demand equilibrium based on online shipping times until early December," Munster said. "It appears that the 5S could follow the same pattern based on early ship time tracking."Apple Stores also are facing shortages of the 5S. Checking 20 US Apple Stores on Wednesday, Munster's team found the 5S in stock in only 35 percent of them.

iPhone 5S supply almost meets demand

iPhone 5S supply almost meets demand
Searching for an iPhone 5S? Your chances of snagging one have gotten better. In his latest biweekly survey of 60 US Apple stores, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster found that availability of the 5S has risen to 90 percent of all iPhone models in stock. That's a huge improvement over 31 percent only two weeks ago -- and 10 percent at the start of October. At this point last year, the iPhone 5 accounted for 95 percent of all iPhones in stock. However, iPhone 5S availability at AT&T and Verizon are better than that seen for the iPhone 5 at the same period in 2012.Apple's online store lists a ship time of three to five business days for the iPhone 5S, down from two to three weeks earlier this month. Munster said he believes that supply of the 5S will meet demand in early December, mimicking the same route taking by the iPhone 5.And what of the iPad Air? Apple shows a ship time of 5 to 7 business days, an improvement from the prior estimate of 7 to 10 days. Consequently, Munster said he thinks that supply of the new tablet will meet demand before the holiday season rings in.

Slacker iPhone app adds station caching

Slacker iPhone app adds station caching
The latest update to the iPhone app for online radio service Slacker, which offers a combination of personalized radio based on particular artists and curated radio stations, just became available in the iTunes Marketplace. The main advantage of the update, announced a couple weeks ago, is offline station caching, which lets you listen to stations even when you don't have a wireless data connection. It's been available in the Android and BlackBerry versions of the Slacker app since February, and it's a welcome addition to the iPhone version.Caching is particularly useful if you spend lots of time out of the range of a wireless connection, like in a subway tunnel or on a plane. On the iPhone, cached stations will start with about 100 songs, but as you listen to those stations while connected, the app will gradually download more songs to the cached version of the station on your device, for a maximum of about 500. The Slacker iPhone app is free, but to use station caching you'll need a Slacker Plus subscription, which starts at $4.99 a month. That's about half of what you'd pay for the iPhone version of Rhapsody, which offers on-demand playback of any song in its catalog of 9 million and lets you create and manipulate your own playlists.

Report- Palm Pre will sync with iTunes

Report: Palm Pre will sync with iTunes
In fact, the Palm Pre is not only recognised by iTunes, it also syncs seamlessly with iTunes, according to a report on Forbes.com. There is one caveat: the Pre cannot handle Apple's DRM protected songs. Still it's quite a nice feature to have if you plan to purchase a Pre and have all of your music in iTunes. One of the features that Apple has long touted about its hardware and software combination is how seamlessly the two work together. This gives users the ability to sync pictures, movies, videos and data to devices or to the "cloud" with little or no configuration from the user.It makes sense that Palm would have the know-how to be recognised by iTunes. After all, Palm executive chairman Jon Rubinstein is an ex-Apple executive himself. Rubinstein was the head of Apple's iPod division before leaving the company, giving him an intimate knowledge of the device and supporting technology.Apple has been very quick to jump on developers who have tried to circumvent its control over the iPod and iTunes in the past, and they could very well do it again.Considering how vehemently the company has protected it in the past, it seems hard to imagine that Apple would give an iPhone competitor like Palm access iTunes without a fight.

Offender Locator for iPhone tracks sex offenders (review)

Offender Locator for iPhone tracks sex offenders (review)
We tested the app in Texas, and found Offender Locator to be fairly accurate compared with records kept by the local state government. The app displayed registered sex offenders on a map, pinpointing our location with a green bubble and the offenders' with red bubbles. Unfortunately, the map isn't interactive, or at least not in the way we would have liked. You can pinch, zoom, and scroll the map, but you can't access the offender information by tapping one of the red bubbles. For now, you can only access the offender information (name, address, photo, crimes committed) from the Offender List screen. The app is currently available in two versions: the lite version (iTunes link) is free, but lists only 10 offenders, has advertising, and limits you to five searches per day. The full version (iTunes link) costs 99 cents and has no limits. The app is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch running OS 2.0 or later.Do you really want to know how creepy your neighbors might be? Is the information this app provides way too much information for most folks? Let us know what you think in the comments.

iPhone app tracks your iPad--or any other delivery

iPhone app tracks your iPad--or any other delivery
If you ship a lot of packages or find yourself sitting in your front window waiting on the delivery truck--or perhaps if you're obsessively calendar-watching for the day (April 3) to come when some new gadget (iPad) will be delivered--you should consider a tracking app for your iPhone. Junecloud's Delivery Status Touch does the trick, sells for $2.99(iTunes link), and lets you track multiple packages from UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL, and more than 20 additional global delivery services. The feature I like the most in Delivery Status Touch is the ability to track orders from Amazon, Apple, and others before they ship. For example, my iPad order hasn't shipped yet, but the app allows me to access information about my order, including direct access to Apple's order status Web site.Once my iPad ships, the app will integrate its tracking details with Google Maps to show where my iPad is or has been on its journey to me. Once an item ships, the app displays a large countdown timer to the delivery date, as well, and offers push notifications to satisfy the wildly impatient. The company also offers a syncing utility that allows you to check the status of a shipment from any Web browser or the Junecloud's free Mac Dashboard widget.Package tracking map screenJunecloudPackage tracking status screenJunecloud

How to use Spotify's Offline mode on iPhone

How to use Spotify's Offline mode on iPhone
After you have installed the app and have signed in to your Spotify account on your iPhone, you will see a list of the playlists you have created. Tap on the playlist you would like to store on your device for offline playback. Screenshot by Jason CiprianiToggle the "Available Offline" switch, located at the top of the playlist, to Yes, making that playlist available offline. Once you have turned on Offline mode for a particular playlist, you should then see a progress icon next to each song in the playlist. A green icon indicates that song has been saved to your device for offline listening, a black icon indicates that song is awaiting download. Screenshot by Jason CiprianiOnce a playlist has been saved to your iPhone, you will see a green down arrow icon in the top-left corner of the playlist, similar to that seen above. The green dot next to the playlist name indicates that the playlist is a collaborative playlist, not that the playlist is available for offline listening.Screenshot by Jason CiprianiTo save battery, you can force Spotify into Offline mode but tapping on the Settings tab, and turning on Offline mode. Doing so will limit your listening capability to those playlists you have saved to your device, preventing your iPhone from streaming music. Screenshot by Jason CiprianiOnce Offline mode is turned on, you will have to log back in to Spotify once every 30 days to validate that your account is still a Premium account. You can store up to 3,333 songs in Offline mode on each device (up to three) that you have Spotify installed on.
